Lighthouse is delighted to appoint its first Youth Leader for the new Lighthouse Youth Theatre.
From this week (15 June), Programming Assistant Becca Trent will split her week between her programming role and the new Youth Leader job.
“I’m really pleased,” she says, “this is such an exciting opportunity.”
Becca, who has run drama classes at Weymouth Drama Club and has a background in stage management, will teach across the age groups.
“I’ve been a Youth Leader at Weymouth Drama Club since 2014 – my mum started club, so I have been involved with that all my life. I love it. We do classes on Monday and Tuesday evenings and work towards major productions when all the age groups come together.
“The joy of it is not so much training young people to be in the industry, it’s about putting in place the building blocks that they can take on and use in other careers. Some of the young people I’ve worked with have become lawyers, teachers, all sorts of different careers.
“Drama training gives them confidence, but it also improves their communication skills, oracy, cognitive thinking; it’s hugely beneficial on lots of levels.”
Lighthouse Youth Theatre, made possible thanks to funding from the Arbor Vitae Foundation, will admit its first participants this autumn. They will follow an ambitious programme of learning and performance across three age streams building towards an end-of-year production on stage at Lighthouse.
