Young musicians make A Day’s Achievement to remember

Some of the region’s most talented young musicians took part in a special celebration of music making at Lighthouse last Sunday.

Presented by Poole Society for Young Musicians (PSYM) charity, in collaboration with Lighthouse, A Day’s Achievement saw more than 180 young people perform under the batons of conductors Rachel Erdos, Simon Gilliver and Mark Burstow in a varied programme of music that opened with a spirited performance of Vivaldi’s Gloria followed by pieces by Brahms and Marquez.

“The concert was an inspirational showcase of young musical talent and a unique opportunity to grow musically while performing alongside professional musicians,” says PSYM founder and artistic director Alison Kay BEM.

For Vivaldi’s Gloria, Bournemouth Symphony Youth Chorus conductor Mark Burstow led 106 singers (plus staff) on stage as members of the Youth Chorus were joined by singers from Thomas Hardye and other Dorchester schools and the choristers of St Mary’s Church, Swanage. The guest soloists were BSYC alumni Sophia Brown and Alexandra Burstow (sopranos) and Sophie Sterry.

The young musicians of PSYM collaborated with their counterparts from Thomas Hardye School in an 80-strong symphony orchestra with professional tutor support in each section. They were followed by two exciting performances by the PSYM Senior Symphonic Winds.

“It is so important for young musicians to be able to develop their talent and playing on stage at Lighthouse in a nurturing, professional environment is a wonderful experience,” adds Alison.

“We are so grateful to Lighthouse and its team for working with us on this project.”
