Remembering Prunella Scales

Back

Lighthouse was saddened to learn the great Prunella Scales died yesterday, aged 93.

Best known for her playing Sybil Fawlty in the classic sitcom Fawlty Towers, she had a flair for comedy on stage and screen and shared a passion for classical theatre with her late husband Timothy West, who died last November. In later years they charmed television viewers with their canal boat journeys.

In 2001, they appeared together in Rodney Clark’s one-act play The External in a week’s run in our Theatre; and in 2009, they were both at Lighthouse when Timothy appeared as a guest reader in the Tennyson 200 concert as part of the bicentennial celebrations for Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

Cindy Rumley, who was working that night at Lighthouse and took this photo, told us: “I was lucky enough to meet them both when I was on Stage Door as I had to order them a taxi – lovely people.”

Did you see these greats of British theatre on our stages?
