Lighthouse will shine brighter and cleaner after a vital grant from the Theatres Trust in association with the Wolfson Foundation that will enable it to upgrade a number of theatrical lights as it continues its path to Net Zero.
The award of £18,316.20 means the Theatre profile lights can be replaced by LEDs as part of the phased scheme to reduce environmental impact and transition to Net Zero. It is estimated that running costs will be cut by some £1,500 a year, as well as improving energy efficiency by at least 4,815 kWh and reducing carbon emissions by more than a ton – the equivalent of charging 120,000 smartphones.
“Lighthouse is extremely grateful to the Theatres Trust in association with the Wolfson Foundation for this latest grant,” says Chief Executive Elspeth McBain.
“The global environmental situation is of urgent concern, and we are taking action now to reduce our environmental impact across all areas of our operation. We are actively working towards becoming a Net Zero venue by implementing significant energy efficiency measures, such as replacing traditional lighting with energy-saving LEDs, and using the arts to inspire change.”
Theatres Trust CEO, Joshua McTaggart adds: “Theatres Trust is delighted to be able to support Lighthouse on its journey towards Net Zero. The funding through our Theatre Improvement Scheme in association with the Wolfson Foundation will enable the venue to improve its energy efficiency and save money at the same time, ensuring it can continue its role as a nationally and regionally important venue.”
This latest round of the Theatre Improvement Scheme saw a record number of applications to the Theatres Trust, underscoring the scale of need theatres are facing as they work to modernise ageing infrastructure. Theatres Trust has awarded nearly £170,000 in new sustainability grants to support 11 theatres across all four UK nations.
