For the past 15 years, founder and former artistic director of the Swanage Jazz Festival, Fred Lindop, has jointly co-programmed Studio Jazz at Lighthouse, a huge factor behind the ongoing success of the series.
However, last summer, Fred announced that he would reluctantly be hanging up his jazz booker’s black book after the 2025/26 season.
We couldn’t let Fred retire without a proper send off, though, and asked him for a list of his favourite musicians. What a list he came up with – and this gig is the outcome! UK jazz royalty Alan Barnes was top of Fred’s favourite players and it was Alan who herded Fred’s remaining choice cats into this stellar, one-time line up, representing the very best of British jazz spanning the decades. Alan is joined by pianist extraordinaire David Newton, saxophonist/surgeon, Art Themen, expert trumpeter Bruce Adams, plus a premier league rhythm section of Arnie Somogyi on double bass and old sparring partner, Clark (son of Stan) Tracey, on drums. Expect a powerhouse session with real swing from this extra special sextet.
All the musicians on show are band leaders in their own right, with a plethora of recordings to their names. Between them, they have released or performed on over 200 albums, played on a range of blockbuster movie soundtracks, won over 40 UK and international jazz awards, led radio programmes, formed record companies and have a combined age not too far off 400! They’ve played with musicians straddling the genres and decades including Bobby Hutcherson, Bjork, Bryan Ferry, Claire Teal, Amy Winehouse, Jamie Cullum, Tom Jones, Richard Ashcroft, Stan Tracey, John Dankworth, Humphrey Lyttleton, Claire Martin, Arturo Sandoval, Bobby Watson, Eddie Henderson, Martin Taylor, Bud Shank, Stacey Kent, Peter King, Nat Adderley, Greg Foat, Adrian Utley, Omar, James Moody, the Ronnie Scott’s All Stars, the Mingus Big Band, Robert McFarlane and many, many more!
Come and hear a very special night of music in Fred’s dream band which, with Alan Barnes at the helm, is sure also to be full of wit and laughter. Most of all, come and celebrate one of the unsung heroes so important to the British jazz scene as Fred bows out of Lighthouse promoting for the last time (though he assures us he will be back to see the odd gig or two!) You might even get a chance to ask Fred a question or two in the pre-show interview. Early booking advised!
