A Portrait of Bloxworth – Joseph J Field MA MPhil CEng

Mezzanine Gallery

Tue 28 Apr – Sat 30 May 2026

“A Portrait of Bloxworth” is a visual social history of a Dorset village in the early 21st Century. It includes portraits of villagers at work and leisure, and mixed media and soft pastel landscapes.

Bloxworth is a small village (150 inhabitants) surrounded by woodland, farmland and heath in the Purbeck area of Dorset. It was settled in Saxon times and has a medieval church and, close by, there are Bronze Age Round Barrows, Iron Age Hill Forts and a Romano British settlement.

Joseph J Field says “My wife and I have lived in the village for fourteen years and we quickly became immersed in village life, focused on the church and village club. The subjects of the portraits are people I know well, and I have painted them in a work activity or one relating to their interests, partly to capture the diversity of our community. I am interested in narrative art – telling stories through images and text. I have exhibited widely in the UK and beyond and have work in public collections. I studied art post-retirement as a local government chief officer managing technical services and environment departments. I have an MA in Printmaking and over 20 years’ experience of making art and exhibiting.”
