BFI partnership to bring family films to new audiences

Lighthouse is proud to announce Family Cinema, a new collaboration as part of the BFI’s Film Audience Network (FAN) and development work, that has been made possible thanks to National Lottery funding.

As Poole’s only independent cinema, in the heart of the town centre, Lighthouse is augmenting its film programme of British, classic, world and indie titles across a range of genres with a specially curated programme of family films with tickets priced at only £5*. The family films will include much-loved classics, international films, independent and British films.

“The Family Cinema project aims to create and support a new family film community delivering exceptional cinema experiences for families in our area that might not otherwise be able to enjoy a trip to the cinema,” explains Katy Griffiths, Lighthouse Head of Programming.

“The programme will offer a diverse programme of family films for children up to 15 years old with screening accompanied by creative workshops themed around film.”

Neil Ramjee, Film Hub South West Community Manager, adds: “Film Hub South West is immensely proud to support Lighthouse through the generosity of National Lottery funding, as part of the BFI Film Audience Network.

“Lighthouse’s vibrant programme of big screen experiences promises to enrich culture and bring communities together across Poole, Bournemouth and the wider south coast. By sharing stories that reflect our past, present and future, Lighthouse will continue to inspire audiences and strengthen the region’s cultural life.”

With two screenings a month from October, some of which will be relaxed screenings, Family Cinema is an opportunity to experience films on the big screen that are not often shown at the cinema and will create an affordable communal outing for families, establishing a place to gather and socialise around a love of film. Each screening will be followed by a themed arts and crafts workshop.

The new season of Family Cinema opens with:

The BFG (PG)

Steven Spielberg’s 2016 treatment of the Roald Dahl story about a little orphan girl who befriends a benevolent giant and their journey to Giant Country.

Wes Anderson’ charmer in which an urbane fox cannot resist returning to his farm raiding ways and then must help his community survive the farmers’ retaliation.
