Canadian-born, London-based trumpeter and DJ, Jay Phelps, comes to Lighthouse hot from sell-out shows at London’s Jazz Café to perform some of the most famous jazz ever created live as part of a fantastic sextet.
Jay Phelps – Trumpet, Donovan Hafner – Alto Sax, Maddy Coombs – Tenor Sax, Rick Simpson – Piano, Jim Bashford – Drums, James Owston – Bass
Jay has been a leading light on the international scene for 20 years and has performed with some of the world’s top artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Kamaal Williams and Amy Winehouse. With an instantly recognisable warm and projecting trumpet tone, this show sees Jay and his band play the best of Miles Davis’s music in his most famous era from 1958 and 1959, including the albums ’58 Miles and the best selling jazz album of all time, ‘Kind of Blue.’
Prior to the release of Kind of Blue, Miles was busy in the studio, working with the same line-up of musicians: (Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb). In 1958, the year before Kind of Blue, the’58 Miles was released and set the stage for the birth of ‘Kind of Blue’ the following year. These albums defined the ground-breaking approach to the art of improvisation.
It’s difficult to express the importance of Miles’ influence on the world of jazz, with a career spanning over five decades over which time he introduced many major stylistic developments to the art form.
Kind of Blue was honoured by the House of Representatives in December 2009 when they voted 409 – 0 in favour of naming the album a ‘national treasure.’
Don’t miss this opportunity to hear some of the best young London-based musicians perform it live.
