We’re delighted to kick off our new season of Studio Jazz with vocalist Zoe Francis in her debut performance at Lighthouse, in a stellar band featuring 4 superb musicians.
Zoe starting singing jazz while living in New York, attending workshops by the likes of Barry Harris & Shelia Jordan, and honing her craft through jam sessions in Brooklyn, Harlem and Manhattan. Whilst in NYC, Zoe worked with some top musicians including Harry Allen, Harry Whitaker and Joe Cohn. On returning to the UK, she recorded her debut album with pianist David Newton in 2014, going on to record and tour 4 albums with her co-leader tonight, Jim Mullen, including the live album “The Very Thought of You”. Zoe has performed in many venues around the UK and in Europe with Jim, including Ronnie Scott’s, 606 Club, and the Vortex.
Multi award-winning guitarist Jim Mullen is no stranger to the UK jazz audiences. In a career spanning more than 5 decades he has recorded, and toured the globe, with artists including Gene Harris, Mose Allison, Terry Callier, Frank Wess, Jimmy Smith, Johnny Griffin, Georgie Fame, Average White Band Herbie Mann, Kokomo, Brian Auger, Robert Palmer and many others. Jim shared a 15 year partnership with the great saxophonist Dick Morrissey in the Morrissey Mullen band throughout the 1970/80s.
The rest of the band comprises the fantastic and in demand Ross Stanley on Hammond organ (with whom Zoe has recorded 2 albums, Blue Town & Somewhere in The Night) and the brilliant Joel Barford on drums, last seen at Lighthouse alongside Nigel Price. Expect to hear a great selection of lesser known classics, by well known composers, in fresh arrangements!
