Lunchtime Recital: Alicia Mallace-Goulbourne with Jack Campbell

Alicia’s Bio: British lyric soprano Alicia Mallace-Goulbourne has been praised as having a “sensitive legato” and “an outstanding sense of poise and command”. Alicia made her role debut in 2021 as Female Chorus/The Rape of Lucretia with Opera Asteria, other roles include cover Anna/La nonne sanglante for Gothic Opera, Dido/Dido & Aeneas for Opera Asteria, Naiad/Ariadne auf Naxos for Uncovered Opera Company, Cis/Albert Herring for New Palace Opera, Dama/Macbeth for Uncovered Opera Company and Suor Osmina/Suor Angelica for Opera Greenwich. Ensemble roles include Fulham Opera’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Hampstead Garden Opera’s La bohème & Savitri, Gothic Opera’s La nonne sanglante (won the 2021 Offie for Best Opera Production), Regent Opera’s La forza del destino, Scherzo Ensemble’s L’elisir d’amore at Longhope Opera and Saffron Opera Group’s Tannhäuser.

Alicia has received expert tutelage from established performers and coaches including Isobel Buchanan, Susan Bullock, Teresa Cahill, Diana Montague, David Rendall, Nicky Spence, Alison Wells and maestro Ubaldo Fabbri. She has also performed in masterclasses with David Gowland and evening concerts with the ROH Jette Parker Artists. Alicia has performed a variety of roles in staged operatic scenes including First Lady/The Magic Flute, Naiad/Ariadne auf Naxos, Queen Elizabeth I/Gloriana, Fifth Maid/Elektra, Elettra/Idomeneo, Countess/The Marriage of Figaro, Euridice/Orfeo ed Euridice, Marschallin/Der Rosenkavalier and Alice in a scene from Falstaff, performed with the Welsh National Opera. She is also a keen recitalist and has performed in venues across the UK including Old Royal Naval College Chapel, Queen’s House, Charlton House, Christchurch Priory and Egham and District Music Club. Most recently, Alicia has sung soprano soloist for Mozart’s Requiem with St John’s Catford and for Mendelssohn’s Hymn of Praise with the Fordingbridge Choral Society.

Jack’s Bio: Jack Campbell is both a collaborative and solo pianist, and a composer. With this varied background, he often finds himself between creation and recreation. Jack trained as a solo pianist and was a semi-finalist in the George Enescu piano competition 2021–22. He gave a recital of 20th-century music in Bucharest, at one point plucking the strings of the piano. Among Jack’s favourite genres is song – a fusion of music and story. In 2022 he won the Most Promising Young Pianist award at the Somerset Song Prize, and the Worshipful Company of Musicians’ Silver Medal. The latter was a recognition of his work as a collaborative pianist at the RCM, where he continues to work. He’s supported by the Marjorie and Dorothy White Trust and the Henry Wood Award. Jack has recorded a CD of piano music by the British composer Robert Ely. He was music director for the world premiere of Robert’s opera, Fishing, in September 2022. One of Jack’s interests is how invention and technology can enhance a listener’s experience – including the use of coloured lighting, phones and electronic soundscapes. He’s also designed an interactive work called listen to the air around you, where you can build your own nature soundscape.
