Music The Sherling Studio

Extraordinary vocalist Randolph Matthews went down a storm when he supported Natacha Atlas in our 18/19 season, so much so we’ve invited him back with his own band. Randolph’s Quartet (voice/piano/bass/drums) will perform songs from his sensational album Untamed which thrilled critics on its release in 2018 and led to his nomination for  'Best Jazz Performance' at the Jazz FM awards.

Randolph will also preview material from his dynamic new composition about the life story of a black World War One hero: Walter Tull in B major. Vocal-led jazz but unlike anything you’ve heard before.

“Described by Jazz FM as “flawless & world class,” British vocalist Randolph Matthews has been enthralling audiences internationally for 2 decades now. His highly engaging live show mixes original music with surprising reworkings of classic repertoire – both with his band and completely unaccompanied. Nominated as ‘best live performance of 2018,’

Randolph has worked with a whole host of artists from the jazz, blues & contemporary music scenes such as Herbie Hancock , Richard Bona and Mulatu Atstake. His New Solo album Untamed is on release  and his 2nd Album with The Afro Blues Project will be out summer 2019.

Randolph’s latest project ” Walter Tull in B Major ” is centred around Lieutenant Walter Tull; a soldier who fought during the Great War becoming not only the first British-born black army officer but also the first black officer to lead white British troops into battle.

Through his new composition ‘major’ Matthews, and will be singing written songs of the journey of this extraordinary hidden figure. The work is a music inspired ode dedicated to Walter’s life story, beginning with his childhood in Folkestone and success as a professional footballer right up to his courageous displays of valour in World War One.
