Opera The Theatre

Overview

Giuseppe and Marco two Venetian gondoliers, have just married Tessa and Gianetta two local girls, when they are informed that one of them is the King of Barataria.

Unfortunately, identifying which of them is the King is a problem because he was entrusted to the care of a drunken gondolier who mixed up the prince with his own son. They agree to share the responsibilities of governing Barataria until it can be ascertained which of them is the true heir. Matters are complicated when the Duke and Duchess of Plaza Toro reveal that their daughter, Casilda, was married to the then future king as an infant. In true Gilbertian style, true love never runs smoothly and we learn that Casilda is herself in love with another man.
