Film Cinema

Director: Angela Robinson. Starring: Luke Evans, Rebecca Hall, Bella Heathcote. USA 2017. 108 mins.

A biopic of the fascinating story of psychology professor William Marston (Evans), unlikely creator of DC Comics’ Wonder Woman character in 1940. The film is structured around flashbacks from evidence Marston gives to a committee questioning the detrimental effect of Wonder Woman on the nation’s youth. It transpires that his inspiration for the character was his academic wife (Hall) and the beautiful and clever student who became the couple’s mutual love interest, Olive Byrne (Heathcote, The Rewrite). As Marston, Luke Evans (Beauty And The Beast) draws an intriguing portrait of a vain but complex creative spirit, obsessed with fetishism, bondage and sexual dominance. Rebecca Hall’s performance is true grit.
