Director: Zach Braff. Starring: Morgan Freeman,
Michael Caine, Alan Arkin. USA 2017. 96 mins.

In this remake based on the 1979 blockbuster of the same name, three retired pals (Arkin, Caine and Freeman) are robbed of their pensions by duplicitous ex-employers and their bankers. To get even and recover their dignity, they decide to rob a bank. Writer Theodore Melfi’s (St. Vincent, Hidden Figures) script is sharp as nails, and is executed by Zach Braff (Garden State) and his three stars with a gusto that belies their combined 247 years. The consequences and the gags may be almost obvious, but the actors’ comic timing and nuanced performances make this a riotously entertaining film, which is underpinned by a serious commentary on growing old in a callous, capitalistic society.
Contains infrequent strong language and drug misuse.
