Music The Sherling Studio

2017 marks 50 years since John Coltrane’s death. To celebrate this great man and his work, Mercury Prize and MOBO winning saxophonist, Denys Baptiste, brings his new band to Lighthouse to revisit many of John Coltrane’s compositions from 1963-67, rearranging them and presenting them in exciting new forms to audiences, whilst retaining the visceral emotions and cosmic references.

These later works of Coltrane were some of the most emotional and spiritually charged music of the 20th Century, mirroring a time of tumultuous change in America and the rest of the world. The civil rights and anti racism movement, Vietnam and space exploration inspired many artists of the time and John Coltrane was no exception. A Love Supreme, Crescent, Interstellar Space, Meditations, Om and Sun Ship all exemplified this period of creative growth, where the boundaries of jazz were shifted forever.

Denys Baptiste – tenor/soprano saxophone
Nikki Yeoh – piano / keyboard
Neil Charles - bass
Rod Youngs – drums
