Memories of much-missed Lighthouse projectionist John Newcombe will come flooding back as award-winning audio producer Richard Queree’s documentary ‘Projectionists’ is broadcast on BBC Radio 4.

With digital automation rapidly replacing the projectionist at cinemas up and down the land, Richard went in search of the last masters of the projectionist’s art.

Inevitably his quest brought him to Lighthouse where, until his retirement last year, at 82 John was possibly the country’s oldest working projectionist.

A friend to all who knew him John’s career as a cinema projectionist began in the 1950s when he worked as a rewind boy in a one-screen cinema.

Richard also spoke to a teenage projectionist just starting out in his village cinema and Dr Richard Wallace, Assistant Professor in Film and Television Studies at the University of Warwick and a research fellow on the Projection Project, which looks to archive and research the history of cinema projection.

The programme is dedicated to John who passed away last September.

‘Projectionists’ is on BBC Radio 4 on Thursday 13 August at 1.45pm.
