Namvula

Fri 6 Jun 2025

NAMVULA is a singer and songwriter whose artistic journey is an exploration of cultural intersections and heartfelt storytelling. Her music reflects the nuances and complexities of her mixed Zambian and Scottish heritage, and a restlessness born of her diasporic upbringing.

Weaving together a global soundscape that takes inspiration from the deep grooves of Africa, the lyrical sensibility of folk-pop, and the improvisational freedom of jazz, Namvula transports listeners into different worlds with refreshing honesty, crossing boundaries with sonic sensitivity and evocative lyricism.

As part of this performance, Namvula will be presenting a brand new piece of work in development. Chasing Shadows is a delicate and evocative exploration of memory, and the people and moments that form the tapestries of our present. Through composed songs, improvisation and visual landscapes, it explores themes of joy, tenderness, grief, nostalgia and transience.

At the core, Namvula is a storyteller with an over-arching hope in our capacity as humans to touch each other’s hearts and to fill the world with a little more grace. Now, more than ever, in this fractured world, her music is born of a desire to offer a widening of heart-space and a little more human inter-connectedness.

Namvula performs with acclaimed musicians, Mercury-nominated bassist Liran Donin, guitarist Giuliano Modarelli (Khefaya), saxophonist / flautist Chris Williams (Led Bib), and percussionist Mamadou Sarr (Sona Jobarteh).

Chasing Shadows was developed as part of Sound and Music’s In Motion programme, with the support of Arts Council England, Jerwood Foundation and the Garrick Club Charitable Trust.
