Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers was one of the most influential groups in the history of jazz. Leon’s idea for this band is to play some of the tunes from what was arguably the most significant period of the band’s music from 1958 to 1964. The two versions of the band featured leading figures Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter and Bobbie Timmons. With tunes such as Blues March and Moanin, the Messengers epitomised hard bop, one of the most exciting styles in the history of jazz.
