Lighthouse has been honoured with a special award at this year’s Ovations Awards. The Ovations, which provide a platform to recognise talent within local theatrical societies, bestowed the ’40 years’ award on our iconic arts centre as a means of recognising our landmark anniversary this year.

“It came as a wonderful surprise to hear that Lighthouse was to be honoured with this award,” reveals Lighthouse Chief Executive, Elspeth McBain.

“As the UK’s largest regional arts centre it’s really important to us that we support theatre from the grass roots up and we’re proud to be able to play a part in enabling hundreds of talented local performers to access our stages each year. There is a huge amount of talent right here on our doorstep that should be nurtured and encouraged. The work carried out in our recent refurbishment means that the facilities we can now offer include improved dressing rooms, extra rehearsal space and enhanced lighting and sound systems to give local groups a taste of professional theatre life. It’s especially pleasing to receive this award in the year that Lighthouse turns 40 – it’s the icing on the cake of our birthday celebrations!”

“It was a pleasure to award Lighthouse with a 40-year award to acknowledge their contribution towards local theatre and the arts,” said Peter Whitaker, Chairman of the Ovations Awards. “After rehearsing for months, a production company is reliant on a venue to be able to pull out all the stops to make a production go smoothly. I have spoken with many theatre groups who perform at Lighthouse - all of whom have nothing but praise.   I have seen many shows at Lighthouse and my experience has always been excellent. We are so lucky to have Lighthouse and here’s to 40 more successful years.”

Lighthouse has been marking its 40th birthday with a packed programme of events, including the forthcoming Big Birthday Bash on 3 November featuring live band The Deloreons and Steve Power from Wave 105 playing music across the four decades.

We'll hope you'll be able to join us for the party of the year!
