English Touring Opera presents
The Duenna
1 - 2 October 2010
The Duenna is a comedy play/opera which had a formidable success in England in the last quarter of the 18th century. Its terrific popularity made the fortunes of the Covent Garden theatre.
Posterity recognises the Irish librettist, Richard Brinsley Sheridan, as one of the greatest playwrights (and adventurers) of that era, but it has been less kind to the composers. Much of the music was written by Thomas Linley, a youth recognised by Mozart as one of the geniuses of the age.
The result is an unusual opera of shining wit and levity, and one of Sheridan’s best received stage works. Michael Barker Caven’s new production showcases the comic talents of Richard Suart, Nuala Willis and Adrian Thompson, alongside a clutch of young singers. The 17-piece period orchestra is directed by Joseph McHardy, in his opera debut.
The story of The Duenna is based on Sheridan’s own elopement with the daughter of the composer. Don Jerome disapproves of his daughter’s interest in a young man, and would prefer her to marry the more suitable merchant Isaac Mendoza. His daughter’s duenna (female chaperone) is required to ‘fix’ this marriage, but secretly sides with the daughter. Together they trick Don Jerome, and true love prevails.
The production is performed in English with cast in full period costume.
